A Word From The WOR RE On WOR Endurance Racing

To begin, I'd like to say thank you to those that participated with WOR's first endurance race back in October 2010, and also to the racers and teams that provided valuable feedback via our endurance racing survey over the holiday season in 2010-2011. By now it is widely known that WOR has made the decision to feature sprint racing for our 46th annual WOR Games, held over 20-22 May 2011. The move back to a traditional WOR Games format, was prompted by feedback from our members, and the needs of our region and division. However, WOR has not lost the fire to bring SCCA sanctioned endurance racing back to Mid Ohio, and cast men and machine into a grueling contest that brings both drama and spectacle to spectator, worker, and racer alike. For more on what the future holds, and how you can help, please read on.
Yours in the sport,
Frank Levinson

Endurance Racing Outlook
Pending a successful 2011 event, the WOR Board and this year's event organizers will discuss the viability of bringing another event onto our calendar. We will be closely watching, with many members attending and even participating in, the other endurance races in the Great Lakes Division, and also in our neighboring divisions to the East and South so that we can continue to gauge the potential for holding a future endurance event at Mid Ohio. Hearing from you, the competitors, workers, and stewards will also help shape the future for this type of event - so don't be shy when we see us at events, and feel free to contact us via e-mail.

The response to the aforementioned survey indicated that nearly 20 teams were strongly interested in participating at a Mid Ohio event, with another 15 teams interested but tentative in their commitment. While these numbers are encouraging, they are on the low end of what would be needed to have a successful event. Additionally, between the other endurance races on the calendar, such as those held at Nelson Ledges, New Jersey Motorsports Park, and Virginia International Raceway, we realize that adding another event to the calendar may unduly crowd the schedule. While these items pose significant challenges, they are not so large as to be overcome, especially if we know an event at Mid Ohio will be well attended.

Endurance racers are a tight knit group and many teams and individuals, spurred on by WOR's 2010 event and subsequent survey, have asked us what they can do to help us put on another enduro. Our response is predictably simple, "raise awareness and get teams to run the event!" In all seriousness, for the concept to work the endurance racing community needs to embrace it. So join us and help us spread the word! If you'd like to join our endurance racing email list, head over to wor-games.com and sign up to stay up to date on the latest news.

Mitchell 1 and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Present Technician of the Future Award to WOR Member

Simon Ward, a WOR SCCA member from Dayton, Ohio received the Technician of the Future award, sponsored by Mitchell 1 and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), during a ceremony on Nov. 17 as part of the ASE Board Meeting & Technician Recognition Awards held in Scottsdale, Ariz. Ward earned this prestigious honor from a total technician candidate pool of close to 400,000 certified professionals. As featured in AfterMarketNews.com.

We’d like to congratulate Simon on being named the ASE Technician of the Future,” said Karen Wagner, senior marketing manager, Mitchell 1. “We are very proud of Simon’s accomplishments as it demonstrates his commitment to being the best automotive technician he can be. We wish Simon the very best – we know he will be successful in his future endeavors.”

Ward is an ASE Certified Master Technician who has worked in the field for four years. He has been employed at Preferred Fleet Services in Dayton, Ohio for the past three years. Ward received an associate of applied sciences degree in automotive technology from Sinclair Community College in Dayton in June 2010 and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, with a minor in philosophy, from the University of Colorado in Boulder in Dec. 2004.

Ward decided to become an automotive technician because he has been around racing his entire life. He was introduced to racing by his parents at two weeks of age. Growing up, Ward and his dad frequented all the local race tracks, including the Indy 500 every year since 1984, and he supported his dad’s brief experience in amateur Sport Car Club of America (SCCA) racing. He also spent a lot of time watching his grandfather work as a machinist, as well as complete carpentry, plumbing, electrical and automotive repairs.

After Ward graduated from college he got an office job, but he did not feel satisfied in his new career. He realized that he wasn’t meant to sit behind a desk. Ward then moved from Colorado to Ohio where he began spending more time at the race track. At the time, he was also working for Rindler Landscaping, where his boss realized he had a knack for fixing engines and allowed him to learn on his equipment.

“I feel very fortunate to work for Gary Madden, a six-time Master Certified Technician, at Preferred Fleet,” said Ward. “He gave me an opportunity early in my schooling and allowed me to complete my internship in his shop. During the past three years with Preferred Fleet, I have gained an immense amount of automotive knowledge, and everyday I continue to realize how much there is still to learn.”

Outside of work, Ward and his brother, Colin, are finishing up the complete build of a Ford Mustang SCCA Improved Touring car, including fabricating the roll cage, machining and rebuilding the engine. The car recently completed its initial technical inspection with full certification of the roll cage. Ward is currently competing in SCCA autocross and rallycross. He’s looking forward to regional competition in 2011.

Although the morning started a little chilly, the sun came out and everyone was soon enjoying sunny blue skies and temperatures in the 60’s.

The race started a bit differently because the grid positions were handed out based on time of paid entry with the pole position going to the earlybirds of High Street Racing. At the green flag the racers quickly reshuffled the order and the fun began. The first hour proved that the Honda America Race Team 1 (HART1) Honda Accord with Michael Galati driving was the car to beat. At the end of the first hour the HART1 team had the most laps (34) and had set the fast time of the day (1:38.9.) They were followed by High Street Racing’s Acura Integra Type R and the Colletti Motorsports RSX Type S with Car and Driver editor Tony Snow at the wheel. Problems surfaced during the first hour of racing as the HART2 Honda Civic developed a misfire, as did the SRT-4 of Doyle Racing. The Toyota Supra of JP Racing broke a front hub and temporarily retired to the paddock for repairs.

In hour two, with 54 laps completed, the HART2 Honda Civic had to retire. Shortly thereafter, with 60 laps in the books, the HART1 Honda Accord also retired from the race. Team leader John Schmidt attributed both failures to water contaminated fuel. The SRT-4 was suffering from a fuel starvation problem due to a faulty fuel cell, but was able to cross the finish line under its own power. Good sportsmanship was on display as all the other competitors were cheering for the SRT. After driving all over the Columbus area to find a replacement hub, the JP Racing Toyota Supra was able to reenter the race in hour 5. Great job guys! The Colletti Motorsports RSX had power steering problems in hour three which cost them five laps to repair. This gave the lead to the High Street Integra and suddenly it became a three horse race between the Integra, the Spec Racer Ford of Crowned Eagle Racing, and the Colletti RSX. At the finish it was the High Street Integra with 226 laps, the Crowned Eagle SRF with 224 laps, and the Colletti RSX with 223 laps.

The two Miatas in the race proved to be trouble free. Waterford’s Greatest Miata completed 205 laps and finished fourth overall, while the Miata of MW Motorsports completed 198 laps. Rounding out the field in sixth was the Colletti Motorsports Integra, which suffered from a broken hub in hour 6 with rising star Greg Vandersluis at the wheel. Vandersluis was able to nurse the car back to the pits without further damage to the front end which enabled the crew to have the car back on track after losing only 10 laps.

Awards were presented to seven “First in Class” winners at the Saturday evening pizza party. The many volunteers that made the Enduro a success were treated to a drawing for gift cards made possible by driver donations. Frank Levinson, WOR Regional Executive, asked “Should we do this next year?” There appeared to be unanimous consent.

WOR Games Feedback

We got a lot of great feedback from this year's WOR Games and the new 8 hour enduro format. Below are some of the comments we received.

"Thanks for putting on this event...I am hoping the event comes back next year."

"Enduro is a big part of roadracing and with Mid-Ohio now allowing this again we can make this an annual event. Thanks so much for stepping up and starting this event. I only want to see this grow."

"That was a great event, hope you do it again next year."

"I had a great time - even though both races had a FCY - the SSC Civic was more spectacular than yours!"

We also heard a lot of suggestions on things we can do better. Our ears are wide open and we look forward to improving the WOR Games every year! If you have feedback you'd like to share, feel free to contact any of the board members to share.

Congrats to WOR racers at the Runoffs

Four racers from WOR made the journey to the Runoffs at Road America this year. The first race on Friday morning was the Touring 3 group (combined with STU). On a cold track at 0830 Frank Levinson fought his way through a gaggle of STU traffic to finish 8th in class. The last race before lunch was the Spec Miatas. Jim Suhr started 55 out of 60, kept his nose clean during a hairy crash at the kink (ask to see his in-car video) and finished 39th. After lunch the father/son team of Fred and Jason Albright took the track in the E Production race. Out of 28 starters, Jason went from 17th to 10th at the finish, while Fred went from 28 to 21st. With all the outstanding competitors from around the country, and with the possibility of crashes and equipment failure to spoil any racer's day, it is no small accomplishment that these racers were able to improve their positions and finish these intense 52 mile races. Congratulations to all our racers for a season well fought.

March 2009 "RE Rantings" with Steve Demeter

Well racing season is just around the corner.

The first Solo event is just weeks away and Frank has a great schedule set.

The sanction for the National Rallycross has been applied for.

The WOR Games Committee, under the guidance of Chair Steve Colletti has started the long process of putting the race together.

And Bluegrass is hosting a Trans AM the week before the WOR Games. This will provide an opportunity for any issues that would come up with a new track to be found and fixed before our race.

I just received an e-mail from the Cincy Region PDX committee that the track has been approved for their May PDX. So things are progressing nicely.

Kudos to Jim Hardesty for coming up with the idea of meeting at Champs. There has been grumbling about changing the meeting location for a while and Jim is the first one to actually do something towards that end. A good time was had by all. The March meeting was the largest turn out in many months. Also thanks to Mike Wright for standing out in the cold at the Christopher Club with maps to Champs in case anyone did not get the word.

Please remember that there is no ill will towards the Christopher Club, but simple economics dictated this change. The room at Champs costs the region nothing.

Dave Rudy with help from his lovely wife is continuing work on the awards banquet. Should be a very special event.

Great job to all.

Solo Nationals To Move To Lincoln Nebraska For 09

After calling Topeka, Kan. home for the last 14 years, the SCCA Tire Rack Solo national championships will move to Lincoln, (Neb.) Lincoln Airpark in 2009.

The Solo national championships have experienced tremendous growth, welcoming nearly 1,200 drivers. The event's success has been linked strongly to the central location and hospitality of the Topeka community and excellent facilities offered by both Forbes Field and Heartland Park Topeka. For 2009 however, it was clear that the continued expansion would require a new venue, the SCCA said in a statement.

"The Tire Rack SCCA Solo national championships [have] had a great home in Topeka for 14 years, with the community providing its trademark hospitality to our members and sponsors," said Howard Duncan, SCCA vice president of rally/solo and special programs. "This has allowed us to grow the event to the point where we need a new location to accommodate the ever increasing interest in nationals. The Lincoln Airpark is the best Solo site in the country and will provide us the new home we need to make the championships more accessible to the growing number of SCCA Solo members."

As is traditionally the case, the ProSolo season finale will precede the national championship event at the same site.

The Lincoln Airpark offers 35.6 acres of concrete for course layouts, 5.7 acres of grid space and 16.9 acres of paddock space. In all, the site is more than double the size of the previous venue. Moving to the Lincoln Airpark marks a return to concrete for the both events, after three years on Heartland Park's asphalt Solo pad.

The 2009 Pro Solo finale will take place on Sept. 5-6, followed by the national championships on Sept. 8-11.

Great Lakes Division Roundtable Agenda
If you have the need for a meeting that is not on the schedule please let us know. We can add your group.

All attendees are encouraged to participate in the Town Hall - Open Forum. Anyone may ask a question or offer an opinion. Moderators will conduct the meeting so all who want will have a chance to speak and a few don't dominate.

The 2009 Race Scheduling Meeting is open to anyone interested in attending. However, there can be only one spokesperson per Region - so make that decision before the meeting begins.

The Solo Meeting is an opportunity for all Solo enthusiasts to gather to share information and ideas and to ask questions. WOR Solo Chair will moderate the meeting and Division Administrators will be on hand to answer questions.

If your Region doesn't participate in the Street Survival Program this is the time to learn what it's all about. It is a win, win, win deal. Your Region gets positive publicity, you provide a Community service for teen drivers and you can make a little money. If your Region already participates, please come and share your expertise.

The Race Chairman 101 meeting is presented by John Peterson and is a must for Race Chairs, future Race Chairs and any key race personnel. He will lead you through the steps necessary to run a good race and stay on the good side of the Division and National.

The Region's Open Forum will give Regions a chance to share problems, concerns, solutions and good ideas. We plan to cover membership, activities, finances, communications (including newsletters, web sites and email blasts), and anything else you'd like to bring up.

Rally Cross has four Regions that we know of with a program in place. They would like to get together and would welcome any other Regions who want to learn about Rally Cross so they can join in the fun. How about a Divisional Rally Cross Series?

Workers, we welcome you with open arms. The workers will have an open forum to discuss mutual issues and the room is large enough to break out into specific specialties if you wish.

We are awaiting responses from some before we firm up the moderators or speakers for some of the sessions. We also welcome volunteers if you feel you want to contribute. We have letters out to possible sponsors for our Continental Breakfast and Breaks. Again, we WELCOME any volunteers, so if we didn't contact you please contact us.

Third Solo Points Event in the Books!

WOR's third solo points event was held yesterday, the 21st. 59 driver's came out to Kilkare to compete; 28 members and 31 non members. It was exciting to see so many new faces, as well as see most of our regulars.

As usual, the event started on time, at 10:15 and ran flawlessly. Everyone received four runs in the morning and four runs after a lunch break for a total of eight runs.
Interestingly, the largest class of the day came from E Stock, with eight drivers. Ken Moist led the class all day and finished around two seconds ahead of second place. It seems he's getting that Miata really dialed in.

The bulk of the action, though, was found in D Stock, where the lead switched back and forth all day. Frank Levinson and George Thielen finished a mere two-tenths of a second from one another, while timing and scoring guru Scott Irwin finished third in his BMW.

Most of the Gordon family attended and all raced Bob's 92 Mazda Miata. While Bob has more experience in this car, it was his sons, Andrew and Matt who came out ahead in C Street Prepared. Currently, Bob is getting the last laugh though, as he is currently winning the points race for the year.

Street Modified also was well attended, as the Civic Hatchback crew was out in force. Adam Kolatorowicz came down from OVR and Greg Hall, David McGuigan and Christian Moist also brought their hatchbacks out. Tom Thieman and Doug Brown (who is getting faster by the day) entered Street Modified 2. Tom Thieman had not only the fastest SM time, but the fastest overall time of the day, besting Christian Moist by over two tenths of a second.

Several faces attended this event that we havent seen much of this year. Hector Fontanet entered his new (to us) Ford Focus for a win in D Street Prepared, while the Olivers (Rudy and Matt) brought the Z06 Vette out to take the top two spots in A Street Prepared.

There is one more WOR solo event this year, which is a joint event with Cincy region, hosted by the Cincy region at River Downs on October 5th. This will be the fourth points event and will count towards WOR year end point totals. Participation at three of our four solo points events are mandatory to qualify for year end awards. Additionally, drivers must be a WOR SCCA member. Hope to see you in October!

Participation credits; what they mean and how to track them

With the announcement, late last week, that you may now enroll online to record your participation for the purpose taking advantage of the club’s volunteer incentive program, I thought it was a good time to go over the meaning and use of that program and how it differs from participation as it pertains to retaining or upgrading your specialty license.

THE NATIONAL VOLUNTEER INCENTIVE PROGRAM was initiated to reward members who volunteer for specific club activities for their participation by reducing the cost of national dues for the member. Members receive $15.00 off their national dues for volunteering to work 4 days per year, $22.00 for working 6 days and $30.00 for working 8 or more days. The funding for this program is derived from a fee, charged to the regions, that is based on the participating car count at amateur events. The only events that count toward this incentive, therefore, are regional and national races and driver schools.

When you get your renewal letter you will receive a form that allows you to record your participation days and submit it, along with the payment balance, to the national office. The program began on January 1 this year so please do not attempt to use any races before that date. The paper form requires sanction numbers for the events you are submitting and I have emailed that information to all of you in two past postings. Alternatively you can register on-line and have the correct balance billed to you at the time of your renewal.

To register on-line you must log into your personal account on the club website (www.scca.org ). Near the top of the page are two red tabs, the second labeled “log in”. Click that and log in if you have an account. If you do not follow the directions under “Never signed on at SCCA.com?”. You will need your current membership number to create an account.

Once you have an account you can view your licenses, edit your mailing address and email address and, now, register your participation dates. Since only valid events are listed sanction numbers are not needed. To register participation after logging in, click ‘My Membership” on the left side of the page. At the top of the membership page are 3 tabs the third of which is “Volunteer Participation”. After clicking that tab you will be on a page that lists member information, active participation and participation history. If you click “add” under active participation you will navigate to a page that will allow you to”
1) Enter a date in the form xx/xx/20xx.
2) Pick a track and event from a list
3) Pick the number of days worked at that event
4) Pick the specialty worked
5) Save the record to your participation history.

Believe me, it takes much longer to explain it than it does to do it and everybody I know who has tried it has been successful. Remember, only club dates count.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIALTY LICENSE RETENTION
The participation requirements for retaining or upgrading your (F&C) specialty license has not really changed but each and every DA reads and does things a little differently. It is only fair that you know how I intend to operate. The day count is set by the national office. No day count is needed to retain your regional license. To retain a divisional license you need to volunteer in your specialty at least 6 days every season. To maintain a national license you need at least 8. Participation days are credited for national and regional club races, driver schools, time trials, PDX dates and street survival events, training and recruiting events that are on a region’s official schedule, SCCA Pro races but ONLY for the days that the SCCA sanctioned event is on the track, and other events that are promoted by a region and on their official calendar. For that last category please have your Regional Administrator of Regional Executive contact me. In these days of high gas prices and aging members I will do what I can to help, within reason. Remember that the intent of the participation requirements is to encourage your participation in OUR events, ensure proper training and skill maintenance and to provide regions with the necessary specialty workers to staff their events. All of you who know me will know what comes next; RECIPROCATION. Any measure of leniency in my interpretation of what counts and what doesn’t for participation credits is going to be balanced against an individual’s application of this principle (hint - if you choose to do a pro event, bike event or vintage event on a date that conflicts with a club event in the division, you will probably NOT get participation credits). I do almost every club event on the west side of the division. Ronda does most events on the east side of the division. Every month we get a list from the national office of the folks whose license renews in 2 months time. If I haven’t seen you I email it to Ronda. If she hasn’t then I email the RA or, in the absence of an RA, I will contact you and ask for a resume of your experience for the last season. As DA I have the ability to continue a license for up to three years if an individual cannot maintain the required participation schedule. I prefer to use that discretion for folks who have physical, family or financial hardships to contend with.

Not to be outdone by Steve Demeter's antics, Jim Hardesty had his own Horse's Ass moment last weekend. He and Scott Irwin were up and motoring to Mid-Ohio at 5:30 am. It was pouring rain and pitch black when both WOR members noticed their tow dolly with Civic attached was trying to make a pass on the left! In the course of stopping to fix the problem the dolly got wedged under the bumper of the Luxo-Tow-Buggy which necessitated Jim and Scott digging out a jack and lifting the Buggy off the Dolly. Hilarity ensued as the pair got sopping wet, all the while being illuminated by a Greene County Sherrif's Deputy who stayed warm and dry in his cruiser.

In not one, not two, but three spectacular displays of classic Horse's Ass behavior at this weekend's event at Mid-Ohio, Steve Demeter has become the early frontrunner to snatch the 2008 trophy from reigning H.A. winner, Retha Tirpack.
Mr Demeter's first try involved starting the race with a 99% dead battery which resulted in his Formula Continental sputtering to a stop in the vicinity of turn one on the pace lap! His second attempt is for his impressive demonstration of "locking the gate after the horse's done run away," Steve requested that the responding Emergency Services worker, a Mr Dave Howard, please turn off his kill switch as Steve couldn't reach it.
His third try was during the Saturday night party when he did his best Tony Stewart impersonation by climbing to the top of the barrier fence outside the carousel. Well done Steve. You've got my vote!

Improved Touring Discussion with Larry Dent

As some of you may know a Task Force was recently created to study the SCCA racing program and the RunOffs with everything, good or bad, on the table for discussion. One of the items was the thought of making IT a national class. This was to be discussed at the upcoming fact to face, but the idea has been openly discussed with drivers at one race this spring, and so I am sending this to all of you for discimination and discussion. I personally am NOT in favor of this for a variety of reasons, cost, it ain't broke, don't fix it, and others.

A lively discussion is taking place on the IT forum. For those of you who don't frequent the IT forum (or haven't done so recently), you might want to look at this:

http://www.improvedtouring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23946

I would like all my RE's in GreDiv to get the word out on this idea with comments back to myself or the BoD ASAP.

Best to all,

Larry Dent

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today the selection of 30 drivers to compete in the all-new Jetta TDI Cup series. The drivers were chosen at a driver selection event April 3-6 at the Firebird Raceway in Phoenix , Ariz.
Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today the selection of 30 drivers to compete in the all-new Jetta TDI Cup series. The drivers were chosen at a driver selection event April 3-6 at the Firebird Raceway in Phoenix , Ariz.

"We're offering a unique opportunity for some of the best and brightest drivers to get their start in a factory-backed racing series," said Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Through an exhausting driver evaluation process, we looked at a variety of factors including driving ability and potential, media and communication skills and overall fit, to choose the 30 best drivers to help promote Volkswagen and the introduction of our all-new 50-state clean diesel Jetta TDI, and ultimately themselves."
The 30 drivers are:

Chad Brassfield, 20, Phoenix , Ariz.
Caleb Kenney, 22, Berkeley , Calif.
Gary Williams Jr., 26, Dana Point , Calif.
Ryan Buetzer, 25, Long Beach , Calif.
Evan Pflock, 20, Redondo Beach , Calif.
Andy Lee, 25, Colorado Springs , Colo.
Jimmy Underhill , 21, Denver , Colo.
Taylor Broekemeier, 21, Fort Collins , Colo.
Josh Hurley, 23, Cooper City , Fla.
Mark Pombo, 25, Duluth , Ga.
Timmy Megenbier, 16, Melrose Park , Ill.
Nick Mancuso, 21, Mettawa , Ill.
Adam Love, 21, Normal , Ill.
David Richert, 25, Niverville , MB , Canada
Chris Castagna, 22, S. Boston , Mass.
Michael DeNino, 18, Gaithersburg , Md.
Chris Kuenning, 20, Grand Rapids , Mich.
Noah Arundel, 27, Tonka Bay , Minn.
John Shim, 22, Starkville , Miss.
Adam Crepin, 20, St. Louis , Mo .
Jake Dallenbach, 18, Charlotte , N.C.
Adam Kretschmer, 21, Brampton , ON , Canada
Andrew Cordeiro, 24, Woodbridge , ON , Canada
Chris Holman, 20, Burlington , ON , Canada
James Kirkham, 23, Beaverton , Ore.
Derek Jones, 24, Philadelphia , Penn.
David Jurca, 22, Federal Way, Wash.
Liam Kenney, 16, Sterling , Va.
Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle, 23, Puebla , Mexico
Wyatt Dallenbach, 16, San Antonio , Texas

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series is an innovative approach to motorsports – 30 factory-prepared and managed 2009 Jetta TDI clean-diesels will be piloted by talented, up-and-coming drivers, ages 16 to 26. Volkswagen's goal is to find the driver with the most talent and help them break into the world of professional motorsports. The Jetta TDI Cup series is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Pro Racing Inc.

The concept is as revolutionary as the car, which is powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TDI, clean diesel engine. The Jetta TDI is lightly modified from spec, featuring race-ready suspension and brakes, and a six-speed double-clutch automatic DSG transmission. Additionally, to highlight its environmental dedication, Volkswagen has partnered with Carbonfund.org to certify the entire race series as carbon free.

"With the Jetta TDI Cup, Volkswagen has created an amazing platform to develop young drivers and expand their knowledge about clean, quiet and powerful diesel technology," said Robert Wildberger, president and CEO, SCCA Pro Racing, Inc. "We look forward to the series in hopes that it will attract more attention to the drivers and advantages of diesel power."

In the end, the winner of the race series will be awarded $100,000 from Volkswagen to aid them in their next steps as a professional racer. An additional $150,000 will be given to the winner if he or she signs a contract with a professional level team within six months of winning the Jetta TDI Cup series.

Schedules Released for 2008 Tire Rack National Solo Season

Sports Car Club of America has released dates for the 2008 The Tire
Rack® National Solo Season, including the Tire Rack Solo National Tour,
Tire Rack ProSolo National Series and Tire Rack Solo National
Championships.Sports Car Club of America has released dates for the 2008 The Tire
Rack® National Solo Season, including the Tire Rack Solo National Tour,
Tire Rack ProSolo National Series and Tire Rack Solo National
Championships.

The 2008 Solo National Tour kicks off the season,
February 23 – 24, in the same spot the 2007 season started, South
Georgia Motorsports Park, in Cecil, Ga. Other highlights include the
return of Texas Motor Speedway on May 3 – 4, after a six year absence,
and the first stop at Atlanta Motor Speedway in a decade, May 24 – 25.

The
regular season closes at a brand new venue, Arrowhead Stadium, in
Kansas City, Mo., August 30 – 31. The date was strategically chosen to
be very near that of The Tire Rack Solo National Championship,
September 16 – 19, to enable competitors to leave their cars and
trailers in Kansas for the interim.

Before the 2008 ProSolo
season officially begins, the South Georgia Motorsports Park will host
a test run of the new timing equipment January 26. The ProSolo National
Series will then commence March 29 – 30 at El Toro Airfield, in El
Toro, Calif. The second round on the calendar is a new venue, that of
Newport Airport, in Newport, Ark., April 12 – 13. Seven more events
complete the 2008 ProSolo season including the ProSolo Finale at
Heartland Park Topeka, September 12 – 13.

ProSolo returns to a
point championship format in 2008. Similar to 2006, a competitor’s two
best finishes from their first three events will be added to points
scored at the ProSolo Finale to determine the National Series
Champions.

Online registration for the National Tour event and
ProSolo test at South Georgia Motorsports Park will open shortly,
registration for the remaining Solo events will open after the SCCA
National Convention Feb. 7 – 9.

Attendees Have a Blast at Banquet

The 2007 WOR Banquet was a success as many soloists, rallyists and road racers attended for wine, prime rib, dancing and awards. Aside from the solo and rally awards, several special awards were presented to deserving members.

Dan Coughnour was awarded the Drive of the Year award. This is awarded to the driver who has a great season and represents WOR\'s dedication to their amateur road racing program.

Jim Hardesty was awarded the Ned Kamp award. This is the most prestigious award WOR presents, given to a WOR member that is a consummate volunteer, one who is always working to make WOR better and more fun for all of us.

Christian Moist was awarded the Joann Burke Memorial Worker of the Year award. Joanne epitomized the spirit and intent of this award in the enthusiasm she had as a volunteer in all aspects of WOR. This is given in recognition of overall dedication to all aspects of WOR -- racing, solo, rally or the club in general.

The Biglers and Starla McCauley received the Nancy Davis award. Nancy dedicated 40 years to working on the WOR Games as a chairman, registrar, committee member, doing whatever she could to make it a successful, safe and fun event. This award goes to a club member that works WOR Games and gives enthusiastically to make the race a success while expecting nothing in return.

Frank Levinson was awarded the Tom Burke award. Tom enthusiastically welcomed everyone to WOR, & actively recruited new members, because he loved the club and wanted others to experience the fun of the club. This award is given to recognize a new member who becomes actively involved in the club and demonstrates that same spirit.

Rex Gunning was awarded the Bob Kimes Memorial Driving Spirit Award, which is given to a racer who while having a great season, also enthuastically participates and contributes significantly in other areas of the club.

Retha Tirpack was awarded the infamous Horse's Ass award.

Congratulations to all the champions and thanks to all who attended! We cant wait to see you in the spring.
