Western Ohio Region put on its first race in 1964, a regional at Mid-Ohio. Les Griebling
of Mid-Ohio suggested the team championship concept, a tradition that continues. In 1965
race chairman Chuck Vesper coined the name WOR Games. WOR Games moved to IRP in 1970 and
remained there until 1987, when the race returned to Mid-Ohio. Traditionally, WOR Games
is known as a fun, friendly weekend. The spirit of the race is symbolized by a special
award created in 1999.
Spirit of the WOR Games Award
Jesse Coleman, a well-known and respected SCCA Starter, was scheduled to be the Starter for
the thrird WOR Games in 1966. When he passed away that spring, Chick Walsh in initiated a
trophy to be presented at each WOR Games in Jesse's memory. The trophy honored an individual
or group who contributed to the betterment of racing through outstanding effort - who
exemplified the spirit of WOR Games. When Chick Walsh died in 1991, WOR renamed the trophy
to commemorate Chick's contribution to WOR and the sport. Sid Rich was a Western Ohio Region
member who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He worked hard and played hard. The Sid
Rich memorial trophy was presented in his honor to someone who demonstrates Sid's philosophy,
"anything worth doing is worth doing in excess." In an effort to keep the Spirit of WOR Games
that these men exemplified alive and well, a new award has been created in their honor. This
award recognizes an individual or group who goes a little beyond, who shows the spirit of
competition or enthusiasm for fun that makes WOr Games.
Nominations for the award can be turned in at Driver's Information. The selection committee
includes race officials. Trophy presentation will be made during Sunday's lunch break.
